Karen Ball – Publishing Consultant at Speckled Pen

With over 25 years’ experience of the publishing industry and expertise in Intellectual Property, Karen’s strengths lie in collaborative creativity, brainstorming, team leadership, idea generation and structural editing.

She has commissioned some of the bestselling series of the past 15 years – from Beast Quest to Frankie’s Magic Football. She’s worked with celebrity authors, debut authors, adult authors, children’s authors and everything in between! Her career includes periods as Head of Editorial at Working Partners and Publisher at Little, Brown Books For Young Readers.

In September 2016 she launched Speckled Pen, a publishing consultancy aimed at helping content generators with their stories and Intellectual Property. Services include brainstorming, concept development, writing storylines, commissioning, ghost writing and editing. Clients can be publishers, authors, agents, licence or brand owners – anyone engaged with books! She prides herself on a collaborative and friendly approach and firmly believe that creativity is contagious.

She has authored over 20 books herself, writes one of the UK’s leading sewing blogs at Did You Make That (where she raised over £3000 for the National Literacy Trust),  and has contributed to The Guardian and several magazine publications.

Finally (phew!) she is the co-organiser of the Book Bound writers’ retreat, aimed at children’s authors.
